On 12th August 2008 English and ICT teachers from SMP Negeri 1,3,5, 17 and 18 are invited by Dinas Pendidikan Kota Malang who had a collaboration with SEAMOLEC(Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Open Learning Centre). The idea was ICT Based Collaborative learning which involved 5 junior high schools as the pilot projects.
The objective are to practice independent learning, to support the integration of ICT into language learning, to expose learners to a more interactive Teaching Learning, and to expose learners to authentic learning materials.
The activities are online discussion forum (English debate), e-mail partnership, mailing list, exchanging learning materials (uploading/downloading material), online test ( UN preparation), quiz/Games, online assignment. It is a non profit pilot project but hopefully
The benefits are the learners will be more independent and more responsible, it will be enjoyable and also could be used as a research object (collaborative research) for teachers. The participants involved in this project are Dinas Pendidikan Kota Malang who provides websites and technical support/training, participants schools who enrich content, update materials, monitor and supervise learning activities and SEAMOLEC who provide consultancy and technical support.
Two weeks later we were invited again but this time Math teachers also invited. The teachers from Elementary, Senior High and Vocational schools were also invited. It seemed very interesting. Everyone seemed optimistic. So we chose the coordinator school for each level. SMP 3 was chosen as the Junior High Schools coordinator.
We had three workshops in Computer laboratory in SMP 3 Jl dr Cipto 20 before we were ready to upload and used the material for on line learning. It was actually a hard job to organize five different schools with different teachers. Every school had different programs, the teachers had a lot of jobs in their school besides it was fasting days. Really, high dedication was needed. Fortunately, we could finish the job. It was not perfect yet, but at least we had tried and the trial ran well, although not as well as we hoped for because of the netting trouble.
Well-done teachers! You are really great fighters!
The English teachers from MGMP involved in the first projects are Bu Arie (SMP 3), Bu Rosida (SMP 1), Bu Sari (SMP 5), Bu Yunani (SMP 18) and P Arya (SMP 17). We worked together to make vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing materials on descriptive text related to school life. We hope English teachers from other schools especially the MGMP members will contribute in the program.
