Bu Rurik's Profile

Bu Rurik got her turn on the third day.
She was the second winner.
Her paper: Improving Speaking Skill through a game called " Marvelous Treasure".
It was a very great performance. The juries were impressed. She combined the presentation with micro teaching. She felt awful when she answered the questions. But the three ladies ( B Arie, B Rena, B Rurik) had predicted it before. Anyway it was covered by the way she presented her paper. Amazing!
Bu Rurik and B Rena got a lot of songs to share in the next MGMP meeting.
Congratulation!

Bu Arie's Profile

Bu Arie got her turn in the second day.
It was amazing. She said she finished the paper in two days because she had a lot of jobs to do. She joined the contest like Bu Rena did, was to motivate the other teachers. She would regret if the good opportunity like this contest flew away.
Her paper: Improving Students' Scanning Skill Through Reading Race.
Among the participants, she was the only one who made the innovation for "excellent" students.
She was very surprised when she was called to be the first winner because she realized her mistakes at the last time of the question-answer time. The jury yelled at her to show her that she was wrong. She thought she failed at that time, besides according to her Bu Rena's presentation was interesting because she had the video in her slides while Bu Rurik's performance was really great.
But anyway, she devoted this winning for everyone who has been helping her throughout her career as an English teacher.
Congrats!

Bu Rena's Profile

Bu Rena got the turn on the first day.
She was great because she was very calm and looked confidence in presenting her paper.
Her paper was: Throwing the Earth: Improving the Students' Reading Skill
Although she was not the big three this year, she was grateful because this was the great opportunity for her. Her hardwork was paid off when she had a chance to present her paper and idea. Now, everyone knew how she was in the classroom and why her students loved her very much. Her effort in this contest was actually against her way of life. She devoted herself to her students but she joined the contest was also to motivate the other teachers to join the same contest next year. Well done Bu Rena!

SLB Bedali Lawang.
Lomba Inovasi Pembelajaran bagi Guru Matematika, IPA dan Bahasa Inggris. (LPMP Jawa Timur)
"Heart Sport" that was the name for the activity.
The opening of the contest was hel on Monday at 10.30-12.00
After having lunch, at 13.30 we began!
38 participants in English room from Kota and Kabupaten in East Java were in " Heart Sport" room waiting for the "slaughtering time"
38 selected papers from 125 papers had to be presented in 30 minutes ( 5- preparation, 10 - presentation, 15 answerng questions/defending). Every day the activity ended at 5.30 p.m. the situation was very tense in the first day but gradually began to melt. We met some friends there. It seemed everyone felt the same as we did. Nervous!
The juries were Widyaiswara from LPMP: P Kistono, P Muhyidin and P Ismukoco. Although we knew them, they wore other mask at that time: the masks of juries, so everything was different!

In the middle of the day, that was the beginning of the stressing day!
Three papers of the four we had sent to LPMP passed the first selection. Congratulation Bu Arie, Bu Rurik and Bu Rena, sorry Bu Sunne (next year hopefully your turn!). With one teacher from Science, Bu Nunik, so there were 4 ladies (we had a new name for these ladies: THE STRONG POWERFUL PUFF GIRLS!) prepared for the presentation in Lawang at the 1st - 4th of December 2008. 4 days full of hardwork! We learned how to make slides in the form of Power Point. Bu Rena did very well, she could make the slides in two hours although she had no experience before! Bu Nunik even started to operate the computer by herself in a short time. We met some people. We were very lucky, because we met Bu Dewi (SMAN 1) incidently in Diknas when she got her prize for the innovative learning the week before. She shared her experiences and gave us many tips. In that day we also met P Bimo ( a great fellow!), he helped us and even trained us and accompanied us from the beginning until the end of the "show". We met with P Win, the expert in innovative contest. He gave us a lot of tips and orientation. It was a great help to reduce our stress. And another luckiness happened when we tried to work on the computer lab in SMPN 3, we met P Fajar ( another great helper), we practiced and worked on our presentation until 8 p.m. Really! What a hard work! On Saturday we met P Win and B Ninik (SMA N 9) for the last rehearsal. We were too tired to have another rehearsal. So we cancelled the meeting on Sunday with P Razy or P Djoko to evaluate our English. Everyone got sick at that time, stressing, really stressing time. Although we ate nice meatball afterwards, but still bu Rena and bu Nunik should go to the doctor! many thanks to everyone who helped us!

Wednesday (November 12, 2008)
It was the first experience for us, the four teachers who represented MGMP in joining the contest and writing a paper in a short time. All we had was merely the idea of innovation in the classroom. So for the "starter" we had a meeting in SMP N 3 to make the outline of our paper on Wednesday. Then everyone made their own paper and collected on the next week. We only had less then a week.
With all knowledge, power and spirit we finished our paper and collected in Diknas on Tuesday evening. P Pri took all papers to LPMP Jawa Timur at 19 November together with 2 papers from Math teacher fellows and 3 papers from Science teacher fellows.
The four of us felt relieved and thought that it was the end of the stressing days. We didn't know that it was not the end yet, it was the beginning!???

Innovation 3

November 10th, 2008.
It was an emergency meeting. Because we failed to get 4 innovative lesson plan for LPMP contest in Diknas Workshop. Bu Rena spread the invitation immediately just two days before the meeting. Thank God, more than 40 teachers came. Everyone brought their lesson plan, but they were not sure whether there was an innovation in it! So we divided ourselves into 4 big groups. Each group discussed to fix one of the lesson plan, also chose someone to present their innovative idea. Then we found 4 ideas of innovation: Bu Yayuk's group in Speaking, Bu Rurik's group also in Speaking, Bu Rena's Group in Reading and Bu Sunne's Group in Listening.
We agreed that the four teachers also represented MGMP in Lomba Inovasi Pembelajaran LPMP 2008. But Bu Yayuk resigned as she herself was not so sure about the idea, she said she would prepare for next year. Then everyone agreed that Bu Arie's example should go to the contest (Actually Bu Arie decided to accept it just to motivate the teachers, she thought it was a great opportunity for the teachers). So at the end of the meeting we had four teachers that should make a paper about their innovation in 9 days! what an experience!Good luck Bu Arie, B Rena, B Sunne and B Rurik!

The 3rd of October Meeting

Here we are again.
The third of November, we have a meeting.
There are 3 teachers speaking. Bu Mahmura (SMPN 5) is talking about her experience joining the "workshop about Teaching English" in Lampung. P Nasib (SMP N 4) is sharing his "oleh-oleh" about innovation in Teaching English, he got the material when he joined a workshop in Asrama Haji Sukolilo Surabaya the week before. P Kuncara (SMP N 16), who joined the workshop in Surabaya the week before as P Nasib, is sharing about the Remedial Teaching. Thank you Bu Mahmura, P Nasib and P Kuncara for sharing with the members.
For everyone who like to copy the material shared by those teachers, contact B Rena in SMP 19. Remember to bring your flaskdisk or CD. See you in the next meeting!

innovation 2

Thursday, 30 of October - Monday, 3rd of November

Diknas Kota Malang held a workshop about Innovation in Teaching Learning Activities. There were two speakers: P Ashari from UM and P Djoko from UIN.

The content of the workshop was important because the participants learned what and how innovation was. Bu Sunne from SMP 8 was volunteer from SMP as the model of Teaching Learning before she learned to put "an innovation" in it.

The participants should made the Lesson Plan with innovaton in it.

Then 2 selected teachers from each level (Kindergarden, Elementary, Primary, Secondary Schools and Vocational Schools) presented their lesson plan in the form of micro teaching in 15 minutes). It was good although it was very difficult to move the classroom environment to very large audience like that (more than 100 teachers!). While a teacher performed, the other teachers gave score for him/her. Great activity!

another recount from b Arie

October 27, 2008
While the English teachers had a workshop with P Adnan Latief about Classroom Action Research, I was away. I was invited by LPMP Jawa Timur, along with Bu Zubaida (Diknas) and P Pri (MGMP IPA), to attend the meeting of preparation for the contest for English, Math and Science teachers. "Lomba Inovasi Pembelajaran bagi Guru Matematika, IPA dan Bahasa Inggris' was held in two stages. The first was the paper (should be collected on November 19, 2008 and the second was the presentation for the selected paper, held at December 1st -4th.
It was a pity that I missed the interesting workshop, but I was glad for two reasons, first, 38 people came to the workshop (it means a lot to me,because it means that Bu Rena's hardwork was succesful), secondly the "lomba" was interesting for me and matched with MGMP plan.(I also believe that Malang has plenty of wonderful English teachers). So the three of us (Bu Ida, Pak Pri and I) made a plan to hold a workshop about innovation, actually B Ida from Diknas had planned a workshop the next Thursday before the invitation came, what a coincidence!
There we were! Having workshop about innovation in Teaching Learning. for three days: Thursday- Monday, Oct the 30th to Nov the 3rd.

October 27, 2008.
38 English teachers in Malang had a workshop on Classroom Action Research (CAR). MGMP Bahasa Inggris SMP Kota Malang had a kind of collaboration with UMM (Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang) to hold a serial workshop on CAR. Actually, the first meeting was about anything related to the theory of CAR, and the rest of the meetings will be the writing of the research by the teachers with the help of the UMM lecturers. This activity is a good beginning for the English teachers as they have opportunity to hold the CAR with the help of the experts (The best thing is that it is free of charge!!!). Hopefully at the end of the meetings, there will be 4 or 5 meetings arranged by the teachers and the lecturers, all the participants will be able to write a CAR, then make CAR as their good new habit. Keep the spirit teachers!

A Recount from Bu Arie

Workshop in Malang Municipal Main Library

On August 23rd 2008, Bu Rena and I joined a regional workshop about “Promoting One’s Competency through Developing Speaking Text and Teaching Speaking by using IT”. The workshop was held by Malang Municipal Main Library in collaboration with Malang Fun English Club (MAFEC). The contribution was Rp 40.000,- for the snack and lunch, certificate, paper bag and voucher from IM3. The participant should bring their own PC with WiFi and also had an e-mail account.

The topics are:
1) Promoting one’s competency through Developing Speaking Text and Teaching Speaking using IT by Dr Emalia Irigiliati, M.Pd (State University Malang), Farida Ulfa, S.Pd, Maria A.M. Isviola, S.S
2) How to involve Students in Speaking Class by Iswahyuni, M.Pd ( University of Muhammadiyah Malang)
3) Impropmtu Talk: From classroom Activities to Classroom Action Research by Yuliana Tri A, S.Pd (ASBI SMAK St Albertus Malang)

It was interesting actually, but it seemed that the committee was not well-prepared so we spent a lot of time to set the computer and link it to the internet. After the speakers presented their material ( it was intended to use e-mail as their media but it failed!) , the participants searched the material from internet, made their teaching material and presented them. However, because the time was limited, most participants were disappointed as they could not present their product.

The materials from Bu Mimil (Dr Emalia Iragiliati Sukarni, M.Pd) was sent to my e-mail account. And I put it in this blog. So you can browse it and download it if you want to.

Bu Rena and I have learned a lot from this workshop. First, we know more that nowadays it is very important for teachers to be familiar with computers and internet. Second, we have some new friends who are possible to be invited to share their experience in MGMP in the future. And this is the most interesting, Bu Mimil would like to visit our MGMP. She has a program related to Case Study Research and she’d like to share and guide us to make the Case Study. So, benefits for everyone!

On 12th August 2008 English and ICT teachers from SMP Negeri 1,3,5, 17 and 18 are invited by Dinas Pendidikan Kota Malang who had a collaboration with SEAMOLEC(Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Open Learning Centre). The idea was ICT Based Collaborative learning which involved 5 junior high schools as the pilot projects.

The objective are to practice independent learning, to support the integration of ICT into language learning, to expose learners to a more interactive Teaching Learning, and to expose learners to authentic learning materials.

The activities are online discussion forum (English debate), e-mail partnership, mailing list, exchanging learning materials (uploading/downloading material), online test ( UN preparation), quiz/Games, online assignment. It is a non profit pilot project but hopefully

The benefits are the learners will be more independent and more responsible, it will be enjoyable and also could be used as a research object (collaborative research) for teachers. The participants involved in this project are Dinas Pendidikan Kota Malang who provides websites and technical support/training, participants schools who enrich content, update materials, monitor and supervise learning activities and SEAMOLEC who provide consultancy and technical support.

Two weeks later we were invited again but this time Math teachers also invited. The teachers from Elementary, Senior High and Vocational schools were also invited. It seemed very interesting. Everyone seemed optimistic. So we chose the coordinator school for each level. SMP 3 was chosen as the Junior High Schools coordinator.

We had three workshops in Computer laboratory in SMP 3 Jl dr Cipto 20 before we were ready to upload and used the material for on line learning. It was actually a hard job to organize five different schools with different teachers. Every school had different programs, the teachers had a lot of jobs in their school besides it was fasting days. Really, high dedication was needed. Fortunately, we could finish the job. It was not perfect yet, but at least we had tried and the trial ran well, although not as well as we hoped for because of the netting trouble.
Well-done teachers! You are really great fighters!

The English teachers from MGMP involved in the first projects are Bu Arie (SMP 3), Bu Rosida (SMP 1), Bu Sari (SMP 5), Bu Yunani (SMP 18) and P Arya (SMP 17). We worked together to make vocabulary, grammar, reading and writing materials on descriptive text related to school life. We hope English teachers from other schools especially the MGMP members will contribute in the program.
